Effect of Smart Water Meters (SWM)' Installation on Water Table Fluctuations in the Roshtkhar Plain

Abstract :
Changing in climat and decreasing in rainfall, and also increasing in population have caused the indiscriminate extraction from deep wells, as the main source of water supply in Rashtkhar plain. The result of which was a severe drop in the groundwater level and a critical situation in the Roshtkhar aquifer. In order to reduce the crisis, several management activities have been carried out, including the project of installing smart water meters (SWMs) on the wells of the plain, as a subset of the rehabilitation and balancing plan. Investigating the trend of changes in the water level of observation wells in 20 years’ hydrographs, as well as calculated hours of operation and energy consumption of their corresponding selected agricultural wells shows considerable decreasing in the slope of the water level changes trend line of the observation wells after installing the SWMs compared to before installation. So that, in 9 observation wells, which have continuous and correct statistics, there was an average decrease of 46.4% in the drop of water level after SWMs installation.
