Assessment of water quality for drinking purposes in Kouhe-Sefide-Sofla area (NE Iran)

Abstract :
The Kouhe-Sefide-Sofla area is located in Razavi Khorasan Province, Iran (NE Fariman). The main lithological units of this area include shale, marl, sandstone and conglomerate. Groundwater quality could be affected by accelerating water-rock/sediment interactions near the abandoned fluorite mine in this area. Therefore, in order to determine the groundwater quality for drinking usages, 10 water samples were collected from the water resources in the region. The Piper diagram illustrated that the dominant chemical composition of the water samples was Na-HCO3-. Based on water quality index (WQI), the 80% of the water samples were suitable and 20% unsuitable for drinking usages. This study demonstrated that the collected water from the villages in vicinity of the Kouhe-Sefide-Sofla fluorite mine had the lowest quality for drinking, which is due to water-rock/sediment interactions in this area.
